MotorStorm for the PlayStation 3 is a fast paced, hardcore off-road racer. Evolution Studios and SECA teamed up to give the PlayStation 3 one of its best launch titles. Along with Resistance: Fall of Man, MotorStorm is one of the high points of the PlayStation 3 system. This hard-hitting title brings back the feel of original arcade racing games while integrating the amazing graphics capability of the PlayStation 3. MotorStorm looks as great as it plays.
With all of the current racing games on the market, MotorStorm is a refreshing alternative to games such as Need for Speed and Midnight Club. For starters, MotorStorm is set during the day as well as off the beaten path. In fact, there is no path. The race maps are set up to give the player a choice of paths to take: lower, muddy paths for heavy vehicles and higher, dirt packed paths for lighter vehicles. MotorStorm is packed full of jumps and ditches causing a more intense racing game than those set in the city streets. There are also four skill levels to keep experienced players from tiring of the game too quickly. The game looks and feels amazing and with the optional steering of the sixaxis controller, the game never gets old. While there are plenty of vehicles to unlock, the vehicle customization is lacking: only three colors to choose from for every vehicle. This fact does not hinder excitement though, as there are many different vehicles to choose from – from dirt bikes to big rigs – the thrill of MotorStorm is not quick to die out. The graphics are amazing, as they should be on the PlayStation 3. One of the most elaborate parts of the game is the crash sequences. They are newly designed to give the player a rush of adrenaline and give you some entertainment even when you crash.
Online play is fast and furious, though it does not seem too different from the offline game play. This is mostly due to the fact that the A.I. in MotorStorm is amazingly challenging. The higher level you play on, the more advanced the A.I. gets, must as expected. But what is not expected is that the A.I. will actually try to take you out of the race: either by running you off a cliff, knocking you off a bike, or simply running you over in a big rig. Sometimes the A.I. is so good at trying to stop you its almost annoying.
I would not justify spending five or six hundred dollars on a PlayStation 3 just for MotorStorm, but if you are interested in purchasing one it should help your decision. MotorStorm is a great title for the up-and-coming PlayStation 3. This title is definitely worth purchasing.
